Last season, I attended The Academy of Magical Arts’ Awards Show, considered by some to be the equivalent of the Oscars for magic where long-time mentor and friend, Curtis Kam received a Special Fellowship Award for Significant Contributions to the Art of Magic.

For over two decades, I've been a magician, the guy reaching into thin air, making playing cards appear and leaving audiences slack-jawed.   But lately, I've realized the real magic happens beyond the stage. It's in the silent conversations that flicker between me and the crowd, the moments where hearts connect over something far more powerful than sawing someone in half.

One night, during a light-hearted routine about my parents' divorce, a young man in the audience snagged my attention. Maybe 13 or 14, he suddenly leaned in closer, his eyes wide as I shared how that experience, while tough, ultimately led to a deeper understanding of love and family. As I spoke, a hand landed on his shoulder – maybe an aunt, a confidant – but his gaze remained on me. At that moment, I realized…. he had to be experiencing the same thing.
